Parents' Handbook


Dear Parents/Carers,*

Together with the Governors and staff, I am delighted to welcome you as new members, to our school family.

When your children begin school, you, as parents, become fully signed up partners in the education process. In this school, staff and parents work closely together to provide a setting that supports each child’s individual learning style.

Our first priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of your children so they can grow, learn and play in an atmosphere of mutual trust. All members of staff work to establish a respectful and secure relationship with their class, in an environment where children can flourish. They use their expertise to provide an engaging and challenging curriculum which encourages children to develop as independent and resilient learners.

Religious Education, based on the teaching of the Catholic Church, is central to the school’s mission. The children’s faith and relationship with God is nurtured through learning about the life and teachings of Jesus and exploring how we live our lives as Christians. Quality prayer and worship experiences deepen children's spiritual growth in an age appropriate way.

The experience and opportunities your children have at this school will prepare them to move on to the next stage of their education with a love of learning and the confidence to embrace future challenges.

Larmenier & Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School is a voluntary aided school in the trusteeship of the Archdiocese of Westminster. As such, the Governors are required to pay 10% of the upkeep and development of the building (capital works). To cover this cost, parents are invited to pay a voluntary annual contribution towards the maintenance of the school building through the Governors' Fund.

The Governors are the strategic leaders of the school and have a vital role to play in making sure every child gets the best possible education. Their purpose is to conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement.

The Governing Board has a strong focus on three core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure the school's money is well spent.

The Headteacher is responsible for the educational performance of the school and the internal organisation, management and control of the school.

The structure and membership of the Governing Board is as follows:

The School

Temporary Arrangements during the Covid-19 Pandemic:

In order to manage drop off and collection arrangements and social distancing, the school has implemented a one-way system through the school site.  Entry is via the main entrance on Brook Green and the exit is via the vehicle gate located on Hammersmith Road. All parents/carers will be required to strictly adhere to this.

Adjusted start and end times are being implemented from the autumn term to facilitate the movement of groups through the school site, to support social distancing and to minimise contact. The timings for each year group is as follows:

 It is important that these timings are strictly adhered to each day in order to help keep the whole school community safe. If you arrive before your child’s allotted time, you will need to maintain social distancing while waiting away from the school entrance on Brook Green. Lateness is not permitted and the school will continue to closely monitor punctuality and may need to make alternative arrangements for families if this is an issue.

 Families with more than one child attending the school should drop off and collect all of their children at the time allocated to their oldest child (as shown in the above table).



 Parents have a legal duty to ensure their children of compulsory school age receive a suitable full time education by regular attendance at school. Good attendance is crucial for pupils to take full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them. Good attendance ensures continuity and progression in their learning and enables them to fulfil their potential. Poor attendance may leave a pupil vulnerable to falling behind.

If your child is sick and cannot attend school:
Parents must telephone the school office between 8.00 a.m. - 9.00 a.m. to register any absence. This procedure must be repeated each day your child is absent from school. In line with local authority guidance, the school is obliged to phone, on a daily basis, the parents of children who are absent from school and who have not been reported absent.

In addition to the daily phone calls, an email explaining the reason for the absence must be sent to the office on the first day your child returns to school. An absence will be authorised by the Headteacher when the reason given is considered to be legitimate. When a reason is not provided, absences will be recorded as unauthorised.

If your child is late for school:

If pupils arrive after 8.55 a.m. for school, they will have missed registration and must report as late to the school office and have their name recorded before proceeding to class with a late card. Late marks form a permanent part of your child's attendance record.

If you need to collect your child during the school day:

If it is necessary to collect your child from school during the school day to attend a medical appointment, you must provide a written request to the Headteacher in advance, detailing the reason and the time you will arrive to collect your child. Wherever possible, doctor and dental appointments should be booked to take place out of school hours. Parents arriving to collect a child must report to reception where you will be asked to sign your child out of school. You will also be required to present the child's appointment card or letter at this time.

If your child will be collected late or by someone unknown to the school:

It is important that your child is collected punctually at the end of the school day. In the event that you or the adult collecting your child will be late, the school must be telephoned in order that your child can be reassured. If a third party, unknown to the school is to collect a child, advance notice must be given directly to the class teacher regarding the identity of the person. Unless they are properly notified, teachers will not allow a child to go home with an unknown person. Written permission for a Year 6 child to travel home alone from school must be submitted to the Headteacher by the child's parent. 


Best attendance (190 days each year) is expected from all pupils to ensure that they benefit from the education being offered. The school's attendance target is 97% and the school closely monitors pupil attendance. The parents of pupils whose attendance is at risk of falling or falls below the statutory threshold of 90% (after which school-age children are regarded as persistent absentees) will be contacted by the school to discuss their child's attendance and strategies to improve it.

Holidays are not permitted in term time and term dates are published in advance of each acadmic year to support families in their planning.

Each term, every child with excellent attendance (98% and above) receives a certificate in recognition of their achievement. In orfer to keep you informed of your child's attendance, and overview of their attendance and punctuality will be sent to you at the end of each term.



All pupils are expected to behave in a calm and good natured manner. Discipline is based on an ethos of love, care and respect for others. High standards of behaviour and good manners are expected at all times, in accordance with the school’s Behaviour & Discipline Policy. Rewards and incentives are given in recognition of good behaviour and achievements. In the event of persistent misbehaviour, parents are contacted in order to seek a resolution to the issue. Parents are reminded that a respectful approach and positive relationship with the school is essential. It is never appropriate for any parent or adult to approach another child or parent regarding school matters. Courtesy and politeness should be our hallmark.


Parents are asked to provide the school with emergency contact details for three named people. Parents must notify the school office immediately of any changes to mobile, home or work telephone numbers and email  addresses to ensure that they can always be contacted during school hours. Any change of address must be notified to the school office immediately.



Milk is available during the morning for pupils. It is free for pupils under 5 but there is a charge for 5-11 year olds. Cool Milk supplies milk to this school. Parents can order and pay for milk directly via the 'Cool Milk' website Pupils in receipt of free school meals are also eligible for free milk which the school funds through the Pupil Premium grant.

Pupils in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1) receive a piece of fruit each day and Key Stage 2 (KS2) pupils may bring a piece of fruit from home to have at morning play.

Pupils attending after school clubs may bring a piece of fruit to enjoy ahead of their club session.


The school is strictly nut free, food containing nuts should not be brought into school under any circumstances.


The school has its own in-house catering team, lead by our Head Chef and Sous Chef. Pupils enjoy an hour of relaxation each day when they have lunch and time for play. All pupils are expected to have a cooked school meal. Lunch money for pupils in Year 3 to Year 6 must be paid in advance for either the half term or the full term. From September 2020, school meals will cost £2.20 per day. Due to a governmant initiative introduced in September 2014, school meals for children in Reception to Year 2 are free of charge.

The government also provide free school meals for families in receipt of certain benefits. Registering for free school meals could raise an extra £1,320 for your child's school to fund valuable additional support. Families eligible for free school meals should contact their Local Authority in order to make an application.



Assessment plays an important part in helping teachers to recognise pupils' progress, understand their needs and to plan appropriate activities and support. Ongoing assessment is an integral part of the learning and development process.

Assessment in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery & Reception) teachers and support staff use observation as a tool to understand children’s level of achievement, their interests and learning styles, and to then shape learning experiences for each child reflecting those observations. All adults who interact with the children contribute to the process and information provided by parents is valued highly.

As part of the school's on-entry assessment, teachers undertake a baseline which is observation based and used to gather information on children's starting points when they join the Nursery or Reception classes. This is used to inform planning and to help measure pupils' progress over time.

Assessment at Key Stages 1 & 2 (KS1 & KS2)

Teacher assessment is the main focus for assessment at KS1 and KS2 .The outcomes are based on teachers’ knowledge of how a child has performed over time through the Key Stage. 

In Year 1 a Phonics Screening Check is administered to all children in the summer term. Children who do not meet the expected standard at the end of Year 1 are re-assessed at the end of Year 2.

In the summer term, pupils in Year 2 undertake statutory tests in English and mathematics. Outcomes of these assessments are used to help inform teacher assessment judgements which are reported to parents at the end of the year.

From June 2021, children in Year 4 will take a statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). The purpose of the check is to determin whether pupils can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. Along with teachers' ongoing assessment, the MTC is intended to support schools in idenitfying pupils who may need additional support.

In the final term of Year 6 children undertake end of KS2 statutory assessment tests designed to assess the children's knowledge and understanding in English and mathematics. National Curriculum test results are reported to parents in their child's end of year report.


Information about procedures used in our school to safeguard pupils and protect them from abuse and neglect can be found in the school's Child Protection & Safeguarding Policy which is available on the school website.



The school treats the safety of the children with the utmost importance and this includes matters pertaining to the use of technology. All parents are asked to sign the school's Use of Technology Parent/Carer Agreement'. This covers a range of areas, including digital photography.


The school is diligent about the safety and well-being of its pupils and staff, and has established policies and procedures in place.

Parents are required to complete and sign the health questionnaire and to return it to the School Nurse via the school office. All pupils have their health screened, (usually when in Reception class), which includes height, weight, visual and hearing tests. Parents are welcome to discuss any health issues with the School Nurse. Input from parents helps to develop any Health Care Plans that are required.

The school’s qualified First Aiders treat minor injuries received at school and a log of all accidents is recorded. Parents will receive written notification if a child has sustained minor injuries during the school day. All head injuries, even the most minor will be reported to parens in the same manner. If a pupil becomes unwell and is unable to remain in school or is involved in a serious accident parents are notified immediately.

The school will do all it can to support and care for pupils with medical needs in order to ensure their attendance at school and their access to the curriculum. However, medicine will not be routinely administered by staff members.

Checking for head lice and nits is the responsibility of parents as hair inspections are not carried out at school. Parents should consult their health visitor or pharmacist for advice concerning the treatment of nits. In any case of infestation, the school must be informed.

Fire drills take place each term according to officially approved evacuation
procedures. In addition, the school has stringent evacuation and invacuation procedures in place.



Closed circuit cameras monitor the school grounds and all persons entering and leaving every entrance and exit to the school 24 hours a day.



The school is inclusive and strives to ensure equality of opportunity for each pupil regardless of gender, race, disability, age, religion/belief, sexual orientation, or/and gender reassignment. The school has an Equality Policy to ensure that the needs of all members of the school community are addressed. A close working relationship between home and school contributes well to the educational success of all pupils regardless of ability or special educational needs.

The PE kit should be stored in a cloth draw-string bag, which is kept in school during term time. All items of uniform must be clearly marked with the pupil’s name. The navy tracksuit is only used for outdoor PE in the winter months.

Jewellery must not be worn in school. Girls with long hair are expected to wear it tied back. Hair bands must be blue or white. Boys are expected to have formal haircuts (no fashion cut-in styles permitted).



Parents are always welcome to come into the school as partners in their child’s education. All appointments to see the Headteacher are made through the school office. Should any parent wish to discuss a matter with their child’s class teacher, it is necessary to make an appointment. Parent/Teacher conferences are held three times a year so that parents can discuss their child’s progress with the class teacher. Written reports are sent home towards the end of each school year.  The school uses questionnaires to ascertain the views of parents in order to review and further improve the performance of the school.

Any parent who may have an hour to spare during the school day is encouraged to help regularly or from time to time. For example, supporting group activities in the classroom, attending class outings or helping in the library or garden plot.

The school produces a monhly newsletter to inform the school and parish community of the latest news and forthcoming events. The school website is also a useful source of information.


The PTA works with energy and enthusiasm to raise funds to enhance the
curriculum and to support activities which promote learning, such as class trips and enrichment activities. Parents are encouraged to help with and attend fundraising events, and to enjoy the many social events throughout the school year.



The school offers a wide range of school clubs each term. These activities provide pupils (Years 2 to 6) with an opportunity to pursue their interests. There is a charge for all clubs in order to cover the cost of the instructors.

The choice of after-school clubs varies each term. A list of available clubs with the relevant application form is sent each term. Examples of clubs that may be available during the course of the year are:

The school has a Choir and Orchestra. Choir members are selected via audition from pupils in Years 4 - 6. Children are invited to join the Orchestra by the music department. Both the Choir and Orchestra require a year’s commitment. 

Pupils in Years 5 and 6 are invited to attend trials at the start of the academic year in order to be selected for the boys and girls football teams and the netball team.

Parents may be requested to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost of an activity, for example, an educational visit. However, no pupil will be excluded from participating in a day trip if parents are unable to pay.
