The Art Department at Larmenier & Sacred Heart
We have a very successful Art Department at Larmenier & Sacred Heart. Pupils are taught by a specialist art teacher. They make and learn about art in a wide variety of media, both in class an in visits and workshops at some of London’s prominent galleries and museums (e.g The Royal Academy of Art, The Victoria abd Albert Museum, The Tate Gallery).
Art in the classroom
All children are taught the visual and tactile elements of art through techniques and practices ranging from drawing and painting to sculpture and textiles.
The teaching of skills and projects are usually linked to the work of a famous artisit or a current London exhibition.
Year 5 pupils visited The Byzantium Exhibition and The Anish Kapoor Exhibition and participated in workshops at The Royal Academy of Art. They then made their own icons and sculptures in class.
Year 6 pupils visited, An Anthology of Hats Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in preperation for their textile project, making hats.
Extra-Curricular Art Activities
An after school art club is offered in two different terms each year. One club for KS1 pupils and one for KS2 pupils . Work in these clubs is usually more specialised than class work, e.g Japanese painting and doll-making or Chinese printing.
Our school has also had great success in local and national competitions and initiatives; many of which have now become an annual event e.g The David Shepherd Wildlife Art Competition and More House Annual Art Competition.
Pupils’ work is also showcased on the Saatchi Galler Website/ schools portfolio and this is updated regularly.
At the end of the year we run an Art Exhibition of the pupils’ work. These have been extremely popular and very well attended by the LA, art co-ordinators and heads from local schools, the local press and members of the local community.
